Bijouli Modi’s Story

Her Journey

Born in Jharkhand (1958)

Bijouli Modi was born in 1958 in Jharkhand. She did not receive formal education. At the age of nine, she was married to Balram, a gardener.

A Life of Hard Work & Sacrifice

Over the next 35 years, the couple moved to Bardhaman, ran a small dhaba, and raised three children. Through their savings, they managed to buy a modest home.

A Difficult Decision

When Balram developed kidney failure, Bijouli sold the house to cover his medical expenses and family needs. After Balram passed away, her older children criticized her decision to spend their savings on his care and went their own ways.

Working for Her Youngest Son

Bijouli continued working to support her youngest son. She worked as a domestic helper in Durgapur, saved enough to buy a one-room home, and paid for his education. Later, she took a job as a hostel cook to support her son and his wife.

Pain, Illness & Neglect

After developing a stomach tumor that required surgery, she could no longer work. Unable to provide financial support, she faced physical abuse and neglect from her son and daughter-in-law, who eventually evicted her.

A New Beginning at MaitriGhar

In May 2022, Bijouli moved to Vrindavan and joined MaitriGhar.

Today – Living in Peace with Dignity

Today, she receives regular meals, shelter, and medical care while living alongside other women in the home. She now has a stable environment, dignity, and a place to live in peace.
